Terrace House Mirage, Sydney

Terrace House Mirage, designed by Alcami Architecture in Sydney, redefines the Victorian terrace house with a poetic blend of space and light. Targeting the typology’s inherent limitations—lack of outdoor space and narrow 3.4m width—the design blurs inside and out, turning the entire ground floor into an extended outdoor haven. A new courtyard with a sliding panel parallel to the stairs creates a fully open space, while floor pebbles and frameless full-height glass enhance visual continuity. A floating bench pays homage to Donovan Hills D House, weaving architectural heritage into the contemporary narrative.
Cultural memories and architectural inspirations interweave to enrich the space. Metal chains and roller blinds draw from Spanish outdoor vernacular, echoing the client’s childhood and cultural roots, while aligning with Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenology of space. Elevated mirrors, inspired by Adolf Loos’ American Bar, expand the ceiling’s perception into an infinite sky, erasing party walls from sight. Placed in the courtyard, these mirrors reflect surrounding trees indoors, forging a visual bond between the dense urban fabric and the intimate home.
The operable courtyard stands as the project’s crown jewel—a sophisticated system of custom bifold doors and sliding panels hung from hidden steel and LVL beams. This engineering marvel thins the roof, evoking James Turrell’s perspective works, and reveals neighboring trees inside the house. Beyond aesthetics, it optimizes natural light and ventilation, eliminating the need for excessive artificial lighting and air conditioning. The raw, outdoor-inspired finishes minimize maintenance, avoiding unnecessary paints and chemicals, while embodying a rugged yet refined aesthetic.
Functionality is reimagined through space-saving ingenuity: the induction kitchen bench doubles as a dining table, eliminating the need for a separate dining room. When opened, the levelled courtyard merges seamlessly with the interior, expanding usable space without increasing the footprint. This pragmatic approach addresses the core challenges of Victorian terraces, offering replicable solutions that could reshape how architects approach such housing typologies. Every design choice balances form and function, proving that small spaces can be both efficient and emotionally resonant.
Sustainability is embedded in the project’s DNA, prioritizing material reuse and extending the lifespan of preexisting elements. Fibre cement panels for ceilings and cement wall renderings achieve the desired concrete look while repairing and fortifying the original structure, ensuring its longevity for another century. This approach avoids waste and reduces environmental impact, aligning with a responsible design ethos. The project demonstrates that sustainability need not compromise aesthetics, but can instead enhance the home’s integrity and timeless appeal.
Terrace House Mirage is a stylistic tapestry blending Modernism, Japanese Architecture, 70-80s Spanish and Italian interior design, neo-classical layering, planar design, and corner elimination. This fusion reflects the architect’s personal exploration of transitional periods—mysterious, expressive, and akin to Expressionism’s emergence during the Weimar Republic. For the client, the home is more than a residence; it’s an aspirational escape from unsettling reality, where art and architecture converge to create a space that nourishes the soul. It stands as a cultural contribution, reimagining what a small terrace house can be.
