This two-bedroom cottage located in Eltham, northeast of Melbourne, is a peaceful retreat that award-winning cinematographer Edward Goldner has reserved for himself amid his high-intensity creative output and frequent travels. Constantly shuttling between various filming locations and constantly switching between the intense focus of visual storytelling and the fast-paced rhythm of the industry, he has increasingly realized that this modest-sized, gentle-tempered residence offers not only a place to live but also a necessary psychological buffer.

房屋建于2001年，由建筑师兼建造者迈克尔·R·杨（Michael R Young）设计完成，延续了埃尔瑟姆地区深具代表性的建筑传统。以手工夯制泥砖、可再生种植木材与回收材料为核心结构语言，其空间气质可追溯至阿利斯泰尔·诺克斯（Alistair Knox）与景观设计师罗伯特·博伊尔（Robert Boyle）等人所奠定的地域性实践脉络。住宅外观质朴而内敛，焦赭色入户门之后，展开的是由泥砖墙体、红砖铺地与木饰天花共同构成的主起居空间，材料本身即承担了温度、触感与时间感的表达。

The house was built in 2001 and designed by architect and builder Michael R Young. It continues the representative architectural tradition of the Eltham area. With hand-tamped mud bricks, renewable plantation wood and recycled materials as the core structural language, the spatial temperament can be traced back to the regional practice context established by Alistair Knox and landscape designer Robert Boyle. The exterior of the house is simple and reserved. Behind the burnt sienna entrance door, the main living space unfolds, composed of mud brick walls, red brick flooring and wooden ceilings. The materials themselves convey the expression of temperature, touch and the sense of time.

在后续的使用与调整中，戈尔德纳始终保持对原有建筑语言的尊重，仅增设了一座造型朴实的 Oblica 壁炉，使空间在视觉层次与日常使用上更加贴合当下生活。他的个人审美游走于斯堪的纳维亚与日本风格之间，通过家具、艺术品与旧物的自由组合，为这座泥砖住宅引入一种轻盈却有秩序的当代表达。大面积落地窗将室内生活自然延伸至周围林地之中，鸟鸣与风声成为空间的自然背景，也使这座小屋在繁忙与归返之间，始终保持一种稳定而克制的安静力量。

In subsequent use and adjustments, Goldner has always maintained respect for the original architectural language, adding only a simple Oblica fireplace, which makes the space more visually layered and practical for contemporary life. His personal aesthetic straddles Scandinavian and Japanese styles, introducing a light yet orderly contemporary expression to this adobe house through the free combination of furniture, artworks and antiques. Large floor-to-ceiling windows naturally extend indoor life to the surrounding woodland, with the chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves serving as the natural backdrop of the space. This also enables the small house to maintain a stable and restrained quiet force between the hustle and bustle and the return to tranquility.
