For this year's Architects Directory, we selected 20 of the world's best emerging architects, giving each an open brief to design the ultimate rural retreat. Their concepts are on show at the Architecture Foundation in London, until 14th July Photography by Anna Stathaki

The 20 houses were designed to be flexible and functional, but also formally and technically innovative, sitting on an isolated countryside site

Presented in a minimal, sculptural set-up developed by Wallpaper*, the models are based on an initial abstract landscape idea by emerging UK practice NaJa & deOstos

Their creations are enhanced by a lighting environment created by specialists Speirs + Major, with technical support from Enlite, incorporating discreet projections of natural imagery, which turns the space into a rural landscape inspired by the brief

The one proviso that the architects were given from the start was for the homes to touch the ground lightly, with minimal disruption to the landscape
