Clay Rise is located in West Hoathly, West Sussex, UK. It is a minimalist residence designed by architect Andre Templeton Ford. This project achieves a delicate and clear balance between contemporary environmental performance and local architectural traditions, responding to the architectural lineage that has persisted for hundreds of years in the area due to its clay soil.

住宅毗邻建筑师的童年居所，这段私人记忆并未以情感化的方式呈现，而是转化为理解场地的实践方法。对地形、朝向及土壤的深入熟悉，使建筑的体量布局、材料选择以及环境策略都显得高度契合场地特性。这里的设计并非简单复制乡土形式，而是从地质条件出发，对地方建造逻辑进行现代诠释。

The residence is adjacent to the architects childhood home. This personal memory was not presented in an emotional way, but transformed into a practical approach to understanding the site. A deep familiarity with the terrain, orientation and soil made the layout of the building, the choice of materials, and the environmental strategies highly compatible with the characteristics of the site. The design here is not a simple replication of local forms, but rather a modern interpretation of the local construction logic based on geological conditions.

材料体系在项目中呈现出清晰的层级关系。外墙所用的砖取自场地开挖的同一黏土层，烧制而成，从而在地基与立面之间建立起连续的地质联系。预制木结构框架在两周内完成搭建，为建筑提供了高效的结构系统；而砖墙与黏土瓦覆盖则兼顾了热惰性与地域识别度。建筑外观通过环绕的水平界线标示砖与瓦的转换，这种材料的微妙变化顺应坡地，而非依赖传统装饰构件。

The material system in the project exhibits a clear hierarchical relationship. The bricks used for the exterior walls are taken from the same clay layer excavated from the site and are fired to create a continuous geological connection between the foundation and the facade. The prefabricated wooden structural frame was completed within two weeks, providing an efficient structural system for the building; while the brick walls and clay tiles coverings also balance thermal inertia and regional identification. The appearance of the building is marked by the surrounding horizontal boundaries, indicating the transition between bricks and tiles. This subtle change in materials conforms to the slope of the terrain rather than relying on traditional decorative elements.

弧形屋顶是最具辨识度的设计元素，其形式同样源于环境考量。建筑后侧嵌入山体约1.5米，为屋顶曲线提供结构深度，同时形成错层空间，使住宅能够灵活分为上下两个独立单元。南向开口增强冬季采光，而中央楼梯中庭则充当热烟囱，通过东西向可开启的窗实现自然通风与热调节，使建筑在功能与舒适度上保持高度平衡。

The curved roof is the most distinctive design element, and its form is also derived from environmental considerations. The rear of the building is embedded into the mountain about 1.5 meters, providing structural depth for the roof curve and creating a stepped space, enabling the residence to be flexibly divided into two independent units above and below. The southern-facing opening enhances winter lighting, while the central staircase atrium acts as a heat chimney, achieving natural ventilation and thermal regulation through east-west operable windows, maintaining a high level of balance in functionality and comfort for the building.
