Streamlined and restrained in form, yet softened by warm tones and tactile materiality, the St Kilda House by ADDARC is conceived around rammed earth and natural light to create a flexible and generous family home.

Located on a prominent corner site, the project prioritises quality over quantity. The client couple sought a residence capable of hosting weekly family dinners and celebrations, while allowing for future age-in-place adaptations and maintaining a strong connection to outdoor spaces.

Set within a bayside suburb of Melbourne on Bunurong Country, the house is organised around a series of enclosed and framed courtyards. These spaces draw daylight deep into the interior and establish visual connections to the surrounding landscape, creating moments of pause and shifting perspectives between movement and stillness. Positioned away from the busy street, the home functions as a quiet retreat, offering a sense of calm and introspection. Operable external louvres allow light, privacy and heat to be carefully controlled, ensuring comfort across changing times of day and seasons.

ADDARC based the design on a grid of rammed-earth walls, with subtle changes in orientation echoed through transitions in timber and stone flooring. This detail-driven architectural language required close early collaboration with builder LBA Construction Group and rammed-earth contractor Olnee Constructions, involving extensive coordination, detailing and prototyping. The result is a carefully crafted home defined by natural hues, material coherence and a quiet warmth expressed through texture and light.

Beyond the central living zone, a resort-like main bedroom is carefully positioned away from the piano, offering occupants a quiet place to retreat and momentarily disconnect. The floor plan is inherently forward-looking, allowing generous flexibility to accommodate evolving needs over time. Adaptable spaces, such as the family lounge, can shift between areas for grandchildren to play and more intimate settings for watching films, while a discreet guest bedroom and bathroom provide privacy and comfort for visiting guests.

A layered mix of raw materials lends depth and richness to the interiors, with their natural imperfections deliberately preserved and celebrated. This material language continues through an earthy colour palette, introducing subtle tension to the clean lines and restrained minimalism of the joinery and stonework, and creating a controlled yet expressive organic contrast. Fluted glass, limestone and timber finishes heighten variations in light and texture, while marble, quartzite, polished plaster and epoxy resin coatings introduce a soft, understated sheen, collectively shaping an interior that is calm yet quietly complex.

Likewise, the architecture is further articulated through its connection to the landscape. A pergola extends the project’s underlying grid logic, while carefully composed garden moments and planting soften the home’s otherwise angular form. Floor-to-ceiling glazing draws lush greenery into every space, creating an ever-changing play of shadows from morning through to night, shaped by shifting light and prevailing breezes.

These qualities are also reflected in the sustainable strategies of St Kilda House, positioning it as a home informed by passive ecological design principles. Orientation, shading, cantilevers, cross-ventilation and daylight penetration are carefully considered alongside the thermal mass of the rammed-earth construction, rainwater reuse and high-performance thermally improved glazing. Together, these elements operate in concert to reduce the home’s overall energy consumption.

The courtyards invite natural cross-ventilation, creating a comfortable and welcoming environment that is sensed from the moment of arrival, beginning with the gentle sound of water moving through the reflecting pool and the sculptural front door handle. Wrapped in a tactile and organic architectural language, St Kilda House by ADDARC becomes the refuge the clients had long envisioned—one they describe as imbued with warmth, calm, joy, relaxation and a sense of quiet surprise.
