“LORO” and “1117” are two distinct brands created by a single jewelry designer. Following the design of its Tokyo Aoyama store, we were tasked with designing the interior for the second store, catering to both brands.
The location is on the first floor of a historically significant building in the heart of Osaka. Originally built in 1930 as a branch office for a trading company, the building has been designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Its stone façade, tiles, and early Showa-era design elements scattered throughout the structure have been preserved, and the building now operates as a tenant space. The client was drawn to the building’s dignified atmosphere, and by utilizing this environment, envisioned creating a jewelry store that also evokes the feeling of a museum or gallery, allowing visitors to take their time engaging with the products.
The existing space is characterized by a two-story atrium with arched beams, a compact mezzanine supported by H-beams at the back, and a steel staircase. Here we decided to add two more H-beams: one running through the center of the space, and another incorporated into the façade, in addition to the single existing H-beam.
The entire space is divided along a central line into two distinct areas: one for “LORO,” where display cases are arranged, and another for “1117,” featuring large customer service tables. Glass windows partition the space based on the position of the H-beams, while the arched beams in the ceiling are left exposed, creating a unified space. The area for LORO is designed with a refined, monochrome aesthetic, featuring mortar floors, custom-made square light fixtures, and black-painted display cases supported by H-beams. In contrast, the 1117 space is softened with natural materials such as a Douglas fir table, a floor covered with sisal, and lighting made from handmade Japanese paper. Additionally, the low-ceiling area under the mezzanine is utilized as a private lounge, creating an intimate space.
By blending these two brands with the historical ambiance of the building, we hope to contribute to the comfort of visitors as they engage with the jewelry in a thoughtful and relaxed manner.
