Megan Brown, the founder and creative director of Penman Brown Interior Design Studio, after more than a decade of international brand and media creative career, chose to return to that once shelved starting point - interior architecture and design. For her, design is a more tactile way of creation, an expression that interweaves art, business and emotion. With the core concept of infusing the created space with heart and soul to build a residence that can carry the memories of life and the warmth of emotions, Megan Browns design transcends the boundaries of form and style, becoming a poetic dialogue about light, space and the soul.

Megan Browns new project, Winden Estate, stands quietly on the edge of Strickland State Forest. It was formerly a farmhouse from the 1980s, but now exudes a timeless and composed temperament - having both the warmth of French countryside and the restraint and refinement of modern minimality. When Megan Brown was confronted with the question of how to strike a balance between tradition and modernity, she told us: We hope it can be like a true home passed down through the ages, bearing the marks of time while maintaining the purity of the present. By allowing the richly textured old materials to coexist with the clean sculptural forms, we are not denying the past but engaging in a dialogue with it.

YINJISPACE: Is there a particular space or detail in the project that you find especially meaningful and would like to share with us?

Penman Brown: I think in the Winden Estate project, the master bathroom is one of the most meaningful Spaces. Its inspiration comes from a romantic imagination - discovering a hidden stone chamber in the ruins of an ancient European village, whose architectural structure evokes peoples desire to explore and feelings of wonder. French limestone extends from the floor to the ceiling, creating a serene atmosphere. The texture of the marble dressing table echoes the external orchard and woodland, allowing the interior to blend with nature. The aged oak, copper green hardware and the light Pierre Frey curtains balance each other, creating an ethereal and serene experience between firmness and softness.

YINJISPACE: Your designs emphasize “authenticity” and “refinement.” How did you consider and implement these aspects in the Winden Estate project?

Penman Brown: Winden Estate demonstrates our pursuit in integrating classic and modern design languages. We create an atmosphere that is both tactile and restrained through the juxtaposed use of rough plastered walls, solid European oak, recycled bricks and French limestone. The bronzed metal, sculptural lamps and emotionally rich wallpaper jointly create a refined and serene space - rooted in the natural atmosphere of Australia while reverberating with the elegant charm of the European countryside.

The owners of this country house were looking for a weekend retreat from their frenetic lives in Sydney’s east. From the outset we envisioned an authentic and immersive, ‘generational’ farmhouse - distinctly European in flavour, characterised by pared back, earthy minimalism, intrinsically connected to the sweeping valleys and established gardens and orchards of this unique 100 acre estate.

We knew the kitchen had to be designed very specifically to not only accommodate large gatherings of people but to provide a sense of family, companionship and fun. Having the freedom to congregate together to prepare a meal, bake cookies and juice fresh fruit from the orchard fills our hearts. Tiered walls were added to the space, gently folding inward from a generous entrance, adding drama and atmosphere while discreetly veiling practical bathroom elements. The path created leads to a monolithic marble slab, set deep into the limestone grotto, below the precious and timeless lantern sconce with its pleated porcelain and brass detailing.
