Athena Calderone has always been known for her cross-disciplinary identity - she is not only the founder of EyeSwoon but also a practitioner of life aesthetics who skillfully navigates between food and design. Her newly established studio The Atelier in Tribeca, New York, marks her transformation from a previous creative model that relied on family space to a truly independent and systematic professional platform. This place is not only the daily working space of the team, but also a brand-new extension for her to explore from recipes to Spaces, from dining tables to utensils.
工作室坐落于一处工业风格的阁楼,空间的核心是一方由她亲自规划的立方体结构,内部兼容厨房与办公区域。对卡尔德隆而言,厨房一直是设计与美食交织的核心舞台,因此她以近乎苛刻的审美精准度来塑造这一部分。岛台的设计灵感源自法国设计师保罗·杜普雷-拉丰(Paul Dupré-Lafon),而樱桃木饰面中点缀的玻璃砖,则呼应了皮埃尔·夏洛(Pierre Chareau)在巴黎“玻璃之家”(Maison de Verre)的现代主义语汇。尤为醒目的是由ABC Stone提供的蜂蜜色缟玛瑙(Honey Onyx)背墙,其竖向拼接方式刻意保留接缝,不再延续大理石包裹的整体感,而是以不完美的肌理强调差异与独特。
The studio is located in an industrial-style attic. At the core of the space is a cubic structure personally planned by her, which integrates the kitchen and office areas. For Calderon, the kitchen has always been the core stage where design and cuisine interweave, so she shapes this part with an almost exacting aesthetic precision. The design inspiration of the island counter comes from the French designer Paul Dupre-Lafon, and the glass bricks embellished in the cherry wood veneer echo the modernist vocabulary of Pierre Chareau in the Maison de Verre in Paris. Particularly eye-catching is the Honey Onyx back wall provided by ABC Stone. The vertical splicing method deliberately retains the seams, no longer continuing the overall sense of marble wrapping, but emphasizing the difference and uniqueness with the imperfect texture.
在功能与美学的平衡中,她展现出务实而灵活的手法。采用JennAir下排风感应炉,避免了传统抽油烟机破坏开阔格局的问题,从而保持空间的通透与流动。公共区域则以居家氛围营造亲切感,悬挂有西班牙艺术家米格尔·马卡亚(Miguel Macaya)的作品,并配合来自Somerset House、Seventh House与Maison Gerard的复古藏品,辅以米洛·博曼(Milo Baughman)设计的餐桌及Louise Roe玻璃器皿,形成一种介于艺术展示与日常生活之间的氛围。
In the balance between functionality and aesthetics, she demonstrates a practical yet flexible approach. The JennAir bottom exhaust induction furnace is adopted, which avoids the problem of traditional range hoods disrupting the open layout, thus maintaining the transparency and fluidity of the space. The public area creates a sense of warmth with a home-like atmosphere, featuring works by Spanish artist Miguel Macaya, along with vintage collections from Somerset House, Seventh House and Maison Gerard. Complemented by the dining table designed by Milo Baughman and Louise Roe glassware, it creates an atmosphere between art display and daily life.
更具意义的是,The Atelier不仅仅是办公场所,它更像是卡尔德隆设计理念的缩影。她首次尝试独立制造灯具与家具,现场陈列的吧椅、底座以及羊皮纸灯具,均以接近画廊水准的方式呈现,展现出她在设计道路上的新一轮探索。
More importantly, The Atelier is not merely an office space; it is more like a microcosm of Calderons design philosophy. She made her first attempt at independently manufacturing lamps and furniture. The bar stools, bases and parchment lamps displayed on site were all presented in a way close to the standards of a gallery, demonstrating a new round of exploration in her design journey.
