Nada Debs

In a rare single-story bungalow from the 1980s in the old town of Dubai, Lebanese designer Nada Debs meticulously crafted her dream home. Unlike the futuristic appearance of this city represented by skyscrapers, she yearns for a living experience that can engage in dialogue with the past - low-key, simple, and carrying the warmth of history. This old house with a retro atmosphere precisely fulfills her imagination of a local feel, and the design of the entire space is gradually constructed around this mood.
As a furniture designer renowned for his organic lines and flexible contours, Debus is not stingy in extensively using his design works in his residence. From the circular sofa in the center of the living room that breaks the linear structure to the carpet inspired by the architectural skylight (Oculus), all are responding to the structural limitations of this house while bringing a sense of relaxation and freedom in the spatial perception. Every piece of furniture and every work of art is carefully placed, neither overemphasizing its own existence nor being swallowed up by the space - they seem to be in a soft conversation, leaving room for each other.
Her choice of color is also full of personal style: the gentle color palette composed of pink, beige and light green not only gets close to nature, but also blurs the boundary between space and landscape. The ceiling is painted in a uniform color throughout, making people feel as if they have entered a complete and wrapped world when they step into the room. The bedroom is an even more intimate and bold expression: the beige blush walls are paired with Japanese-dyed tatami MATS and low beds, juxtapoting her childhood memories in Japan with the traditional aesthetics of the Middle East, creating a unique cultural convergence.
The entire residence is surrounded by greenery. This garden is a collaborative work of hers and the landscape designer, filled with local plants and natural grass species. The outdoor seating and furnishings are made of old bricks - all of which emphasize the continuity of the space and respect for materials and site memory.
In Debus home, art is not an embellishment but an emotional thread. Many of her works come from her friends, including a city image taken by Beirut architectural photographer Dia Mrad. The original site of the work is precisely where the explosion occurred in 2020. Although the picture does not directly show the traces of the disaster, it carries an indescribable emotion. These artworks not only reflect her life experiences but also constitute an indispensable invisible dimension in the spatial narrative.
