House of Horns

The House of Horns residential project is located in Los Altos Hills, California, USA, and was designed by the architectural firm WOJR. The project is located at the foot of the eastern slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking San Francisco Bay. Its design starts from the site of an unfinished "Spanish-style" residence. This is not a construction that starts from scratch, but a response and reinterpretation of the original structure, aiming to reorganize the spatial order and structural language, enabling the building to engage in a tense dialogue between the natural context and historical memory.

The project name "horns" is not intended to simulate any concrete form, but rather to convey a conceptual metaphor: just as the horn flute guides the rhythm in a piece of music, the building is also regarded as an abstract prototype of a "tuning device" - it is "tuned" through design to sense the changing of the seasons and the variation of day and night, capturing the undulating flow of the Bay Area mist between the valleys.

The starting point of the design is the restoration of the original landform, ingeniously embedding the lower level of the building into the mountain, thereby dividing it into two clear spatial levels: above the ground, there is a single-story volume with a complete structure surrounding the hill. The interior space is transparent and continuous, providing open Spaces for activities such as living, gatherings, dining and cooking. Its ceiling is composed of a series of inverted elliptical domes. Natural light is introduced through skylights and high side Windows. Each opening has a clear orientation and light directionality, allowing the light and shadow to flow over time and perform a silent ritual inside the room. On the axis of the space stands a fireplace carved from a single block of marble in Danby, Vermont. It not only serves as a visual focal point but also endows the entire space with order and warmth.

The space buried underground, however, offers a completely different experience. A series of introverted rooms with a cave-like feel are arranged around the core. At the deepest point is a bathing space, with an oval-shaped solid stone column supporting the ceiling in the center. These understated and private Spaces selectively connect with the external nature through sunken courtyards, creating an intimate yet transparent natural boundary between enclosure and openness.

The landscape around the building also returns to its local nature: low-water-requirement meadows, perennial plants, shrubs and Californias native oaks interweave to form a well-defined ecological meadow. This "wild" landscape does not grow randomly; rather, like the buildings themselves, it serves as a "tuned perceptual instrument", resonating in harmony with the natural rhythm.
