Located on Sydneys north Shore, Helsham House is an important heritage of Australian modernist architecture, It was designed by Peter Hall in 1974 for New South Wales Supreme Court Justice Michael Helsham and his wife. The architect, who oversaw the construction of the Sydney Opera House, has used his keen sense of space and structural aesthetics to create a geometric L-shaped house in the quiet greenery of Willoughby. The main body of the house is built of brick, with a cantilevered flat roof designed to create tension, the living area is enclosed on three sides by glass doors, and an inward courtyard and swimming pool bring nature and tranquility to everyday life.

Helsham House was long held by the original owners family until, decades later, the three children decided to sell, not to the highest bidder, but to choose a successor through a proposal. The Bondi couple, Lill and Lucas, impressed the original owners with their respect and love for the building itself and continued the spiritual values of the house. The house has also recently been inscribed on the Heritage List, ensuring that its architectural integrity is not arbitrarily altered.

修复与更新工作由室内建筑师 Phoebe Nicol 主导，在维持建筑原貌与提升日常功能之间寻求微妙平衡。她更换了受损玻璃滑门，恢复软木地板，并对厨房进行了重新布局，以满足现代生活所需。材料选择上，Nicol 引入黑化不锈钢与古铜色元素，与原有胡桃木、柚木、红木等中世纪木材相得益彰。新增的二层空间以温润木质包覆，为双胞胎女儿提供舒适私密的生活区域，而内部则通过埃斯梅拉达石英、青石地面等材质打造出微妙而有层次的感官体验。

The restoration and renewal work was led by interior architect Phoebe Nicol, who sought a delicate balance between maintaining the buildings original appearance and enhancing its daily functions. She replaced damaged glass sliding doors, restored cork floors and rearranged the kitchen for modern living. In the selection of materials, Nicol introduced blackened stainless steel and bronze elements, which complement the original medieval wood such as walnut, teak and mahogany. The new second floor is clad in warm wood to provide a comfortable and private living area for the twin girls, while the interior creates a subtle and layered sensory experience through materials such as Esmeralda quartz and bluestone floors.

Helsham House 的当代表达不在于对旧有结构的颠覆，而是在尊重之上的轻柔介入，以自然光与材料语言回应建筑与环境的关系，也回应了一种温润而克制的澳大利亚式生活美学。

The contemporary expression of Helsham House is not a subversion of the old structure, but a gentle intervention on the basis of respect, responding to the relationship between the building and the environment with natural light and material language, and also responding to a warm and restrained Australian living aesthetic.
