Ravine House is a minimalist residence located in Skurusundet, Sweden, designed by Kolman Boye Architects. This small structure rises from the ravine like a carefully placed chess piece, creating an intentional contrast between the geometric precision of the building and the rugged mountains that surround it.
The site itself was once a modest summer resort, providing an ideal escape for office workers in Stockholm, evolving with the changing relationship between the city and its surrounding areas. The stepped stone walls descending along the canyon and the semi-circular granite-framed fish pond are remnants of early human intervention—integrated into the new narrative of the architecture.
The architect pointed out, The wood is strictly divided into horizontal and vertical elements that contrast with the terrain, giving a strong character to the relationship between the house and the site. This statement reveals the core idea behind the design: rather than trying to integrate the building into the surrounding environment, it emphasizes the structure itself through controlled contrasts. The three-story compact floor plan maximizes dialogue with the environment while minimizing the footprint of the living space.
The building unfolds in the vertical direction. By embedding parts of the structure into the existing cliff, it achieves additional height while reducing visual impact—this is a clever technical solution that meets regulatory constraints and considers aesthetics. The central wooden staircase serves as both a functional passage and an organizational spine, connecting the practical space on the ground floor with the cozy bedrooms on the middle level, and finally rising to the living space with a full glass curtain wall, overlooking the panoramic view of Stockholm harbor.
The choice of materials reflects a thoughtful engagement with traditional craftsmanship and contemporary sustainability issues. The projects exploration of upgraded solid wood materials represents a fascinating innovation in material practice. By transforming knotty pine through the selective sawing and gluing process, the designer creates a distinction between the structural and aesthetic applications of the same renewable resource.
