The Palazzo Caterina Boutique Hotel, located on the main square of the Croatian island of Hvar, is a masterpiece that combines historic 19th century architecture with modern luxury. This hotel not only hosts the rich cultural heritage of Hvar, but also offers a unique stay experience for the modern traveler through innovative design. The project was undertaken by Majorcan design studio Rock - Villa, who specialise in the restoration of historic buildings, with a core concept of respecting the balance between history and modern aesthetics.

The most remarkable feature of Palazzo Caterina is the way it has been restored. Rock - Villa designers Paulo Valcic and Stefan Relic have restored the building with great care and respect, preserving the original stone walls and other architectural elements such as stairs and ornate forms. These architectural details bear witness to the history of the 19th century building and became an integral part of the design. The stone wall background, patina mottled texture and original architectural elements tell guests about the buildings past.

在保持历史建筑的原貌同时，设计师也注入了现代美学。Paulo 和 Stefan认为这是一个充满挑战但令人兴奋的过程，将历史遗产与现代生活方式相结合，创造出一个既尊重过去又满足当代奢华需求的空间。他们在设计中通过对材料的巧妙选择，如亚麻布、木材等，与石材完美结合，形成了一种和谐的对话。

While maintaining the original appearance of the historic building, the designers also injected a modern aesthetic. Paulo and Stefan see this as a challenging but exciting process, combining historical heritage with a modern lifestyle to create a space that both respects the past and meets the demands of contemporary luxury. Through the clever choice of materials in the design, such as linen, wood, etc., they are perfectly combined with stone to form a harmonious dialogue.

特别值得一提的是，这对设计二人组不仅保留了建筑的历史韵味，还融入了赫瓦尔当地的石材元素。例如，他们在所有客房内都设计了独一无二的洗脸盆，由当地石匠从整块石材雕刻而成，每个洗脸盆重量在300至400公斤之间，粗糙与光滑的表面相结合，展现出自然材料的独特质感与深度。

In particular, the design duo not only retained the buildings historical appeal, but also incorporated the local stone elements of Hvar. For example, they have designed unique washbasins in all rooms, carved by local stonemasons from whole blocks of stone, each weighing between 300 and 400 kg. The combination of rough and smooth surfaces shows the unique texture and depth of natural materials.

In the design, the choice of materials is crucial. Stone, linen and wood are carefully matched to reflect not only the original structure of the building, but also the designers commitment to authenticity and quality. The organic quality of these materials imbues every corner of the hotel with a sense of warmth and balance.

At the same time, the art selection of the hotel is also very unique, both respecting the history and integrating modern art atmosphere. For example, a female bust sculpture collected by the hotel owner combines classical and modern styles perfectly, and the old sculpture is covered with leather pieces, making this work retain the elegance of classical sculpture, but also have a modern interest.

This sensory harmony allows guests to not only feel the beauty of the space when they stay, but also immerse themselves in the local nature and culture of Hvar.

Through careful restoration and design, Rock - Villa has successfully transformed this 19th century building into a space that celebrates the past while embracing the modern.
