Situated in Melbournes eastern suburbs, the Light Well residence, designed by architect Ian J. Smith and built in 1972, is a shining example of a home that has truly stood the test of time. Nestled at the end of a courtyard flanked by shrubbery, the four-bedroom home features a double-storey brick façade, two lounges, a study, an internal courtyard and a separate studio, creating an image of a home nestled in the treetops.

From glamorous international nomad to darling of the Australian design scene, Simone Haags rise has been meteoric. Returning to his hometown of Melbourne, after eight years of honing his skills in furniture, artwork and accessories design at top interior design firms, he founded his own design studio specializing in timelessly textured interiors.

Light Well House is a Melbourne modernist gem and the first home designed by Simone Haag, who lives here with her husband Rhys and their three daughters. A beacon of timeless design, Simone Haag consistently creates, embraces and enhances the intrinsic charm of spaces.

在对住宅进行现代化的改造过程中，Simone Haag融入传统观念，并使用天然和真实的材料。房屋没有采用灰泥墙做法，而是选择砖或者木材饰面。除墙壁之外，她还保留了厨房原有的瓷砖台面，包括浴室里古色古香的面盆、以及两个复古的水龙头配件，材料的完整性使这座建造于上世纪中期的建筑看起来和初建一样具有现代感。

When it comes to materials, Simone Haag strives for naturalness and authenticity. In modernising the house, she remained faithful to traditional design concepts. Instead of plastered walls, the house is finished in brick or wood. In addition to the walls, Simone kept the original tiled countertops in the kitchen, including the antique washbasin in the bathroom, and two vintage faucet fittings. The quest for material integrity is evident throughout the house, making this mid-century building look as contemp orary now as it did when it was first built.

The home is a smorgasbord of art, showcasing emerging artists such as Michael Georgetti alongside more well-known figures like Gregory Hodge, as well as vintage pieces by unknown artists. The panoply of textiles, paintings and tapestries holds a mirror to mid-century modern design, cutting a striking contrast to the wood and brick walls.

Some of Simone Haags most notable pieces include a vintage tapestry from Holland, antiques from the Paris flea market, original Artemide bedside lamps and Agnes Studio bedside tables, Arflex Marenco sofas, Saporiti Sail dining chairs, and Pipistrello lamps in the sunken lounge! With striking lighting, Simone Haag and her husband Rhys relied on their carefully selected collection of furniture, art and objects to create a ‘personalised’ space.

Its a treat to have their own den for most people, where Simone Haag contemplates projects and arranges some of the fabrics and veneer artwork she has sourced from around the world. One of the most beautiful parts of the homes floor plan is in the youngest childs bedroom, where the living space can be seen through the light well, creating a feeling of close connection to the family.
