“
“Half of space depends on design the other half is derived from presence and spirit.”
(Tadao Ando)
Holmen Abode is a minimalist residential building located in Copenhagen, Denmark, designed by Norm Architects. This project integrates design elements from Japan and Scandinavia to create a peaceful and balanced indoor space that respects both tradition and modern life.
Retaining the original steel frame links the modern appearance of the apartment with its industrial history, creating a seamless fusion of history and modern design in a cohesive space. The low-key interior design draws inspiration from the traditions of Japan and Scandinavia, creating a calm and tidy environment that complements the vibrant atmosphere. Natural materials such as oak played a central role in this design.
Oak adds warmth and texture to the space, blending modern aesthetics while also echoing the historical background of the building.
The selection of this material also emphasizes sustainability and durability, in line with the principles of both design concepts. In the kitchen, customized oak and stone surfaces form the framework of the existing steel structure, combining functionality with timeless beauty.
The tactile sensation of the material enhances the sensory experience, making the kitchen the center of the home. Oak brings natural warmth, while stone brings a sense of eternity, creating a harmonious balance throughout the space.
The staircase has been renovated to blend better with the surrounding environment, using steel longitudinal beams and railings that echo the buildings oceanic origins. Its minimalist design is both a functional element and a sculptural element, blending seamlessly with the overall aesthetic of the apartment.
The entire residence adopts a built-in storage solution to maintain its clean and simple appearance. These thoughtful additions turn personal items into decorations, adding personality without disrupting the overall sense of calm.

Norm Architects
