Fans of the now shuttered Automat in Dover Street can breathe a sigh of relief that its successor measures up to, if not betters, the much-loved American diner.

Named for Sir Christopher Monck, the 17th century maverick and Mayfair resident who owned the nearby Clarendon House, Moncks of Dover Street is an all-day neighbourhood brasserie that serves up crowd-pleasing classics from a delicious full English breakfast to the yield-to-the-fork slow-cooked beef bourguignon.

Taking its cues from the building’s Georgian framework and the heritage of its location on Dover Street, while making the most of the site’s layout and abundance of natural light, design firm Fettle has created two distinct spaces: a curb-side café at the fore that leads to a cosy restaurant in the rear. These are smartly linked by design details like the continuous frieze of pleated fabric that skirts the ceiling, quirky artwork, and the traditionally British oxblood red and royal blue colour palette, revealed through furnishings like the upholstered brasserie-style dining chairs and barstools.

In the café, perch at the 8m long aged pewter topped bar, or linger longer in the welcoming restaurant, where the bold black ad white geometric tiles transition into warming oak floorboards. Here, timber paneling and fluted leather banquettes are tempered with floral fabrics and Carrara marble table tops, creating a welcoming setting to tuck into dishes like the Monck’s burger or the truffled mac - cheese, which both nod to the favourites once found on Automat’s menu. §
