Located in Jeżyce, an up and coming, hip neighbourhood in Poznan, Poland, that combines ornate, Art Nouveau tenement buildings with post-war modernism, Yeżyce Kuchnia is a new restaurant that embodies the area’s social and cultural renaissance. Occupying the ground floor of a modernist 1960s building, the extrovert eatery has been designed by local architect Adam Wiercinski of Wiercinski Studio in collaboration with Agnieszka Owsiany as an open-plan space in order to take advantage of the street-facing tall windows, while the subtle use of colour in the bespoke furniture and lighting creates distinct zones without detracting from the restaurant’s effortless sophistication.
A neutral, off-white and grey colour palette for the floor, walls and ceiling make for a bright, congenial space, boosted by the natural light that floods in from glass facades, as well as references the building’s modernist architecture, as does the steel frame furniture that the architects have purposefully designed for the space. Chief among them is the long bar and coffee counter, the two functions elegantly demarcated by the use of mirrors and white marble for the former and glossy black tiling and black marble for the latter, while a bespoke globed chandelier hanging above echoes its steel frame construction. The mint green colour of the bar and coffee counter’s steel frame is indicative of the use of coloured accents to unobtrusively divide the open-plan layout in subtle zones. At the front, an oak communal table with matching chairs and a brass light pendant invoke a mid-century elegance which is picked up by additional oak tables in the middle of the space. On the back, black is the predominant hue on the far end of the restaurant with black upholstered banquette seating, tables and matching chairs, while a white marble counter alongside the windows provides the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee while watching passers-by.
The combination of sleek interiors and informal, laid back ambience, complemented by the lush, potted plants lining the perimeter, makes an inviting setting to enjoy Yeżyce Kuchnia’s eclectic menu of Polish recipes reinterpreted through a European lens, such as caramelized liver with pumpkin puree, pappardelle and sun-dried tomatoes, black pudding wrapped in baked bacon with butter puree, fried cabbage leaf and grilled leek. With a selection of mouth-watering vegan options like vegan gnocchi with ground flaxseeds, herb pesto, zucchini and spinach, and butternut squash steak which is served with black sesame and buckwheat seeds, kale fettuccine and fig, which during the summer patrons can enjoy on the restaurant’s decked terrace, Yeżyce Kuchnia is a truly all-season and all-diet eatery.
