In 2011, ICRAVE partnered with OTG Management to develop an exciting new dining program at the Toronto Pearson International Airport, with a focus on bringing travelers the best of Toronto’s culinary talent and restaurant scene. The idea was to create 13 hybrid restaurant, bar, and market concepts directly in the gate hold areas. The plan involved removing the traditional Chromecraft gate hold seating and replacing it with custom designed hospitality style seating with iPads at every seat. Travelers can now check their flight information, browse the web, or order food to the gate, ultimately reducing traveler anxiety. This project was an exciting homecoming for Lionel Ohayon, founder of ICRAVE and Siobhan Barry, ICRAVE partner. The two Toronto natives met in architecture school at the University of Waterloo, and this is the first project they’ve completed on Canadian soil. Each hybrid concept has a unique sculptural identity within the greater field of the terminal. Fetta is a lively spot offering guests a selection of fresh panini, salads and small plates by Chef Mark McEwan. ICRAVE worked with OTG Management to create this restaurant, bar and market embedded within the gate hold area, where every seat is outfitted with an iPad from which travelers can order food, surf the internet or play games. For this space, ICRAVE created a cabin in light Canadian maple to offer guests a canopy under which they might find a calm spot to perch. The draped green ceiling slides onto the floor like snow melting off the hills and evokes a refreshing sense of spring. Apropos is the latest collaboration between ICRAVE and OTG Management at Toronto Pearson International Airport. These two identical cocktail bars act as gateway into Terminal One. Apropos features a striking design of wavy, fin-like structures that flank the concourse in the transborder area. The fins were fabricated by Eventspace, a custom architectural fabrication house based in Toronto. They are rotationally symmetrical with a color gradient that varies between the two, forming a beacon to guide travelers through the main terminal. Feeling as though they are passing through an impressive gateway, Apropos offers light fare and cocktails by Brewer Brock Shepard and master sommelier John Szabo to travelers, allowing them to stop and recharge before moving on to their final gate.
