French design showcase Nouvelle Vague travelled to Dubai, bringing with it furniture and objects by leading French names like Pauline Deltour and Francois Dumas, as well as commissioning new furniture from Emirati designer Khalid Shafar, including this 'Octa Dress' table

Shafar worked with Abu Dhabi-based tannery Al Khaznah and its new division Atelier AK to create his pieces, mixing their camel leathers with treated metal and marble

The fair also had a behind-the-scenes element, allowing brands to introduce their working methods to the Dubai design industry. Danish craftsmen demonstrated the detailed work that takes place in their factories in Denmark by making chairs for brands, such as Carl Hansen, Republic of Fritz Hansen and Louis Poulsen, live at the event

Downtown Design is helping propel Dubai's nascent design industry in advance of the launch of the Dubai Design District, a new zone of the city that will offer a mix of studio spaces, showrooms, offices, a convention centre, shops and hotels.
