Lost Lindenberg
Tobias Rehberger
Escaping the bustle of Canggu in Bali, a three-hour drive west unveiled the hidden gem of the island’s west coast. Lost Lindenberg, a name as enigmatic as its setting. At the entrance, a massive neon installation by German artist Tobias Rehberger, with its vibrant colors and interplay of light, served as a striking prelude amidst the lush greenery. This was no jarring declaration, but rather, as if the forest itself had cast forth an alluring riddle, an invitation to another world.

Lost
Passing through a discreet door within the installation wall, a winding path led us deep into the heart of the tropical rainforest. The welcome ritual by the Lost team was imbued with the ancient warmth of Bali: a cooling blessing with holy water sprinkled on our foreheads, and symbolic cotton bracelets for protection and luck tied around our wrists. The forest’s whispers and the ritual’s serenity instantly washed away the fatigue of the long journey.

Jencquel Studio
Lost
Denise
As we moved further into the forest, a small courtyard enclosed by dark volcanic stone provided a transition. Ascending a few steps, we entered the hotel’s “paperless” reception area. Gone was the traditional front desk, replaced instead by a relaxed space that felt like a “home”: surfboards leaned against walls, a vinyl record player hummed white noise, and ceramics by Jencquel Studio, surf magazines, and Lost-branded merchandise were casually displayed. As Denise, the owner, put it: “We deliberately stripped away the ‘work’ of check-in procedures, leaving only the warmth of coming home, and fragments of memories to take away from this place.”

“Highline”
Max
A longitudinal skywalk named the “Highline” formed the central spine of the hotel, linking four soaring tower structures in a staggered arrangement. Architect Max shared the core concept: “To create a dreamlike experience of floating amidst the treetops within the mysterious jungle.” The towers are intentionally elevated, like arks moored at the crowns of palm trees, offering occupants sweeping views of the endless ocean.

Walking on the Highline, I was instantly enveloped by a sense of grand scale imbued with adventurous spirit. The massive pitched roofs and the elevated main structures presented a bold architectural vision, almost model-like in its conception – not crude, but a meticulously orchestrated spatial statement, realized to perfection through exquisite architectural details.

Towering palms and richly layered vegetation became the natural mediators for a dialogue between architecture and nature. Thriving vigorously, they gently embraced and permeated the building’s fabric, seamlessly integrating this grand scale into the lush forest backdrop. The open skywalk, positioned amidst the trees, felt both expansive and intimate, visually striking yet profoundly harmonious. Standing there, it felt like witnessing the perfect realization of an imaginative architectural concept, brought to life through mature craftsmanship and the vital force of nature – a profoundly moving and deeply authentic experience.

The entire site is long, narrow, and deep, tightly enveloped by luxuriant vegetation. Within it, one perceives only the deep longitudinal extension; the lateral boundaries seem to dissolve. The design respects this inherent order: from the forest entry path, to the central axis of the Highline, and onwards through the details of stairs, water features, and trails, it ultimately leads to that iconic expanse of volcanic black sand beach.

Denise
Max
Along the sides of the Highline, semi-open lounge areas are dotted. Spanish moss drapes down like silver tassels. “It’s the birds’ favorite nesting material,” Denise informed us softly. All vegetation on the property was planted later and now grows with wild abandon, shifting with the seasons, attracting different creatures. The natural symphony resonating through the space changes accordingly, filled with the wondrous rhythm of flowing life. Max added that during construction, an old well was unexpectedly discovered, inspiring the concept of a riverbed traversing the site: in the dry season, rugged river stones and plants lie quiet; in the rainy season, well water overflows, forming a spring that gurgles its way to the sea.

Lost
Lost
Lost’s connections extend beyond nature, deeply rooted in the local community and cultural beliefs. A sacred spring on the site is revered and protected by villagers, who have built a shrine and make regular offerings. During construction, workers brought their families, forming a temporary village; an anecdote about a “nighttime encounter with a devil” even brought work to a brief halt. Today, many villagers are part of the hotel staff or suppliers. Lost embraces humility, allowing nature and local culture to continuously shape it, taking deep root here.

Lost
Denise

It’s astonishing that Lost, encompassing over 8,000 square meters with its private black sand beach, lush vegetation, and natural spring, houses only eight guest rooms. Denise clarified the vision: "Everything began with this vast black sand beach that embraces the most breathtaking sunsets. We wanted to create a secluded sanctuary unlike any other resort in Bali." Thus, the name "Lost" was born—geographically lost in remote jungle, experientially lost in unique sensations, spiritually lost in another dimension of time and space.

Launched in 2018 and opened in 2022 after pandemic delays, Lost emerged just as the world’s longing for "seclusion" intensified. Denise shared Lindenberg’s origins: founded in Frankfurt (2012) with a unique "half-long-stay, half-short-stay" model where long-term guests hosted short-term visitors—a concept warmly embraced. Though not replicated at the eight-room Lost, its service ethos endures: 47 passionate and attentive staff (especially in gardening and security) tend meticulously to every guest. The hotel’s purely vegetarian restaurant, committed to local or self-grown ingredients, quietly upholds profound respect for nature and the local environment.

Lost
As night fell, we gathered around a bonfire on the black sand. Waves lapped gently, and rare pink shells collected earlier glimmered in our hands. In this monochromatic realm dyed by volcanic rock, our bodies may have been briefly "lost," yet our souls gathered indelible resonance—poetry of architecture dancing with nature, warmth of cultural fusion, and the allure of an ark of seclusion we willingly surrendered to. With flames dancing, Lost’s essence settled deep within us.
