Yukari House is located at the end of a tree-lined street in Byron Bay, Australia, next to Arakwal National Park. Designed by Tanev Muir Architects, the house blends Japanese style with Australian design elements. The design team not only focused on the quality and emotional capacity of the space, but also aimed to create a deep connection between the residents, the house and the surrounding environment, aiming to create a reflective and poetic living space.
Surrounded by lush trees and abundant wildlife, the old atmosphere of the park creates a contemplative and peaceful environment. Our design strikes a balance between shadow and light, says architect Peter Tanevski. It is neither a completely open modern space nor a closed cave space, but a subtle dialogue. Through meticulous spatial planning, the building encourages residents to stop in between activities and reflect on the relationship between people and nature, making the natural environment an extension of the residential space and allowing residents to feel the breath of nature in their daily life.
The design of the project is inspired by the clients deep connection with Japanese culture, while incorporating the regional identity of Australia. In the building materials, local spotted eucalyptus is used extensively, not only for window frames, joinery and cladding, but also for furniture and details. The texture of this wood forms a dialogue with the rough bark of the adjacent trees, further enhancing the houses connection to its surroundings and allowing the building to live in harmony with the natural landscape.
The interior design reflects a tribute to Japanese heritage while showing the contemporary Australian lifestyle. The kitchen, for example, is the heart of the house and consists of a beautifully spotted eucalyptus table with a monolithic stone island that supports the idea of collaboration, gathering and shared meals. The design also incorporates the Teppanyaki cooking experience, making the kitchen an important place for family members to interact and communicate.
Yukari House
Yukari Houses spatial design emphasizes the dynamic nature of joinery and partitions. The architects used sliding doors and delicate partitions between the rooms to make the space both open and private. In the main living area, the TV is hidden behind sliding doors, while hidden air conditioning and speakers are perfectly embedded in the joinery. This design not only optimizes the function, but also highlights the importance of movement and change as part of daily life, allowing residents to flexibly adjust the layout of the space according to their needs and enjoy different living scenarios.
The bathroom design is inspired by Japanese bathing culture, and the reconfigured bathroom space is quiet and sophisticated. A plain rectangular bathtub echoes the concept of Japanese bathing rituals, focusing on both physical cleanliness and spiritual rejuvenation. The semi-extruded stainless steel washbasin is modeled on the Kiyomasai of the Edo period and pays homage to Japanese culture. The circular bathtub in the outdoor area echoes the natural curve, and the open-air bathtub set at the top allows people to overlook the treetops, enjoy the dual experience of openness and quietness, making bathing a ritual of physical and mental relaxation and dialogue with nature.
Yukari House is a thoughtful renovation of an existing home that emphasizes the balance between functionality and aesthetics. Tanev Muir Architects integrates Japanese elegance into the Australian natural environment through a sensitive grasp of materials, light and detail. I hope the house will serve as an example of architectural quality and emotional dialogue, contributing to the ongoing transformation of Australian architecture, Tanevski said. The house adopts a sustainable design concept, focusing on the use of environmentally friendly materials and efficient use of energy, while paying attention to the emotional experience of residents, creating a warm, comfortable and humanistic living space.
