“We’ve finally found a home for the puppy we raised as teenagers, and we’re also setting aside a patch of grass where our future selves can lie down and reflect.”
- Homeowner
This is an architectural exploration of memory, time, and identity.
The design aims to achieve an emotional translation—transforming intangible memories into tangible spatial materiality—while meeting the demands of modern life and constructing a temporal vessel that both carries the past and nurtures the future.
The space is conceived as an archive that records time. Like archaeologists, we identify and extract the “emotional remnants” from the old house: the paw prints a puppy left on the door during our youth, the metal trim in our grandmother’s room, an old porcelain pillow. These are not preserved as antiques in their original form, but serve as the starting point for the design, translated into a new spatial language.

Those claw marks, as chaotic as a Cy Twombly painting, are transformed into a fiery red vein of stone on the floor. They are no longer dust-covered memories, but a warm manifestation—an eternal testament to the vitality of past lives in the present. Grandmother’s room has been opened up, yet a slender metal frame precisely traces its former outline—a presence in absence, a spatial suggestion of loss and inheritance.
Design is not merely about looking back; it is also about looking forward. Our response to the “future” is not to offer a rigid solution, but to prepare a blank space where growth can flourish.
Complementing the red stone that symbolizes claw marks is a vast expanse of serene yet vibrant green stone, representing a “silent invitation” extended to one’s future self. It is a visual tundra and spiritual It offers shelter as well as breathing room; it is a “bunker” where one can retreat into defense, yet also a window through which the view extends to the distant horizon.

M.B.Gorffstein
Here, red and green are not opposites, but rather a symbiosis and dialogue across the timeline. Red is the past crystallized in green, and green is the future breathed by red. Together, they enclose a complete cycle of life.
Ultimately, the home itself becomes a three-dimensional reply, answering the client’s initial philosophical inquiry. It successfully infuses the emotional emotional richness into the functional shell of the “new home,” achieving a gentle transition from “returning to the old home” to “moving toward the new home.” Here, every detail is an overlay of time, bearing witness to how memories are revealed, how the future is prepared, and how a person settles into their life within this space.

Presence In Absence

The room of the deceased grandmother was demolished, leaving a metal frame as a hint of her former room. A small armchair and porcelain pillow were left by the window beside her bed.

Memooery manifested
The dog from my youth was responsible for waking me up to school every morning, so the door at home was covered with the disorderly paw prints of his hurried knocking,This is like the pattern in a Cy Twombly painting. This determines the selection of some stone textures.
