Design reality
At Xiaoshan Temple in Deqing, you encounter not merely a new structure, but a tangible, immersive, and contemplative“time.” Its story begins in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, when the venerable monk Shi Fayao practiced tea meditation here. Later immortalized by Lu Yu in The Classic of Tea, this site became the cradle of Zen tea culture. Today, architect Gu Yi has transformed this heritage park into a“new kind of Zen retreat”where visitors genuinely wish to linger and unwind.
Design Philosophy: Creating a Place to“Slow Down”Based on Human Needs
Rather than replicating traditional temples, the design team returned to fundamental questions: What kind of Zen practice do contemporary people need? Must it involve seated meditation or structured courses? In their view, Zen practice needn’t be confined to specific forms. True Zen resides within life itself—eating mindfully, sipping tea in quietude, sweeping with intention. Focusing on each daily detail is practice. Thus, the concept of“Living Mindfully”is woven into the space, bringing Zen back to tangible, everyday existence.

Consequently, every design element at Xiaoshan Temple stems from observing and translating these life actions. It offers not just a place for seated meditation, but a space that accommodates gatherings, solitude, reading, tea tasting, and more—all with one purpose: to create a place where people can naturally slow down, quiet their minds, and live mindfully.

A Stroll Through Space: Layers of Time Spanning Past and Present
Upon entering Xiaoshan Temple, time ceases to be linear and instead becomes a layered experience perceived simultaneously. On the first floor, the“Shi Tang”dining space faces the archaeological park through its windows. Within this subdued space stands a glass-enamel Buddha statue by Jiang Sheng. Notably, the dining area’s mirrored tables reflect the exterior scenery, merging reality and illusion. This design ingenuity creates a remarkable connection between antiquity and the present within the mirrored surfaces.

Ascending to the second floor leads to a tranquil meditation room. Upon entering, one encounters the“One Pond, Three Mountains”landscape. Behind the instructor’s seat, a rice paper screen subtly reveals the blurred silhouette of the Buddha statue at the entrance. Scattered bamboo and stones on the floor are secured using the most primitive, handmade methods—simple and unadorned.

The“Source Realm” in the basement level is more open and relaxed. The design opens up the space, bringing in natural light, and even plants a tree by the staircase, creating a freely accessible “under the tree”corner. This space also serves as a long-term open-air market, filled with carefully curated Deqing plant specimens, handmade crafts, and other artisanal goods selected by Guan Zhi Zao Wu. At its center, an open island counter and visible kitchen brim with the warmth of daily life. Here, serene Zen tranquility and vibrant community spirit harmoniously coexist.

Spiritual Manifestation: Time-Imprinted Materials and Light
Every element of Xiaoshan Temple narrates its story through local materials. The rammed earth walls incorporate soil from remnants of old walls; primary materials like bamboo, wood, and ceramics all carry the memory of the land. Even the wayfinding system is crafted from warm rice paper and raw timber.

Light plays another pivotal role here. Natural and artificial illumination are thoughtfully orchestrated.“Tree-Shadow Lamps”trace the contours of foliage, while sunlight streams through high windows and light wells, casting shifting patterns across earthen walls—much like ancient sundials that marked time through the sun’s movement. Here, light and space unite to let you directly experience the shifts of day and season.

Conclusion: An Unfinished Chapter
The transformation of Xiaoshan Temple isn’t a full stop. It stands as a bridge connecting past and future, allowing ancient“source culture”to continue growing today. This project uses modern design language to retell a thousand-year-old Zen tea story, ultimately creating a multifaceted space that both soothes the soul and accommodates daily social interactions.

Here, history is no longer an exhibit behind glass— it is tea to be savored, vessels to be touched, and light and shadow dancing around you. Xiaoshan Temple stands as a vessel holding time, quietly awaiting each present moment to weave new chapters into its story.
