On the outskirts of Hudson, New York State, on a steep wooded slope overlooking the Catskill Mountains, a modern mountain residence named Twisted Ridge was built according to the terrain. This project was designed by the architectural firm The Up Studio, and the interior space was created by Grace Hartmann. The final result is a mountain residence with a sculptural appearance and a warm texture.

The project site covers approximately 67 acres (44,515 square meters), with a steep and perilous terrain. The site features flowing streams and exposed rocks, and is subject to strict forest protection regulations. The building does not impose a rigid and straight volume that forcefully towers above the terrain; instead, it follows the natural curves, bends, and folds of the mountain ridge, allowing the building volumes to grow naturally out of the forest and seamlessly blend into the natural woodland. The dark-toned wood material texture facade is interwoven with large areas of transparent glass, creating a neat and layered line profile; the undulating roof lines echo the distant mountain contours, not only meeting the structural requirements for winter snow loads and optimizing indoor lighting and sunlight, but also outlining a rhythmic architectural skyline.

The total floor area of the residence is approximately 353 square meters. The entire building consists of two structures: the main residence and an independent guesthouse. The modular layout precisely meets the owners needs of maintaining privacy while also enjoying the company of guests. The main residence features an open-plan living area, a kitchen-cum-dining space, and three bedrooms. The master bedroom occupies the best viewing position throughout the building, offering a panoramic view of the mountains. The independent guesthouse is equipped with a dedicated living area, two bedrooms, and an independent bathroom, catering to the diverse living needs of families or guests, whether for short stays or long stays. The two buildings are connected by an open courtyard, which includes a swimming pool, a spa area, and a campfire leisure zone. This design divides the outdoor area into several practical outdoor functional spaces, further enhancing the interaction and integration between the building and the natural landscape. The landscape at the boundary of the site was designed by Bayview Landscape Architecture, allowing for a seamless transition and natural integration of the building, the courtyard, and the native forest.

The interior design adheres to the concept of coexistence between architecture and land, with natural material textures at its core. It combines restrained and simple design language with modern and gentle spatial atmosphere. The most remarkable feature is the open public area facing the mountains: the kitchen, dining room and living room are arranged in a row along the entire panoramic glass wall. Daily living is surrounded by abundant natural light and continuous mountain forest scenery. The space does not create an atmosphere through elaborate decorations, but rather shapes layers through light, materials and expansive views, allowing the living experience to always be closely connected and resonate with the natural environment.
