In conversation with Norm Architects, they remarked, “Nature should be something you feel, not something you notice.” As one moves through the hotel, sunlight, greenery, and subtle shifts in perspective accompany visitors quietly, encouraging an unintentional slowing of pace. They also emphasize, “We do not regard sustainability as a separate layer—it is a design mindset.” Here, the depth, luster, and authenticity of reused and low-impact materials transcend mere novelty, offering rich tactile and lasting emotional experiences. Norm Architects: We did not attempt to rebuild or reinterpret an interior space that had never truly existed, but rather respected the original logic of the building. Dalles Varehus was originally conceived mainly as a solid and rational framework, designed to support flexible and versatile use rather than a fixed or highly refined interior building. Such openness enables us to view the interior as a constantly evolving layer, continuing the adaptability of the building. We did not impose historical narratives but followed the design principles of 1 Hotel, allowing the space to develop its identity and story on its own. Through restrained design, while maintaining structural clarity, a natural, tactile and serene atmosphere is introduced, making the project both loyal to the flexibility and functionality of modernism and embodying 1 Hotels commitment to well-being and sustainability.

Norm Architects: Arrival at 1 Hotel is conceived as a transition from the city into nature. The atrium staircase is not just a circulation element, but a sensory journey. As guests move vertically through the space, they are accompanied by daylight, planting, changing perspectives, and a gradual slowing of pace. This sequence is designed to engage the body and the senses—to encourage breathing, awareness, and presence. In dense urban environments, many of us are increasingly disconnected from natural rhythms. By reintroducing nature as part of movement and orientation, the space offers a moment of grounding. It is about re-sensualising architecture—allowing light, texture, scent, and sound to guide the experience.

Housed within a modernist landmark from the 1930s, the hotel opens into an entirely re-imagined interior where nature, tactility, and human presence guide every gesture.

The atrium lobby becomes an oasis of light and layered textures – crude timber, raw stone, lush foliage, and the understated warmth of upholstered furnishings coexisting in a balanced composition.
