This 1926 duplex residence, located in the Hancock Park historic district of Los Angeles Wilshire area, is the private home of interior designer Carolyn Miller, which she has refined over a period of more than ten years. The original 1920s features of the house, including stucco moldings, transparent arches and classic window styles, were carefully preserved during the renovation, creating a perfect tension with her preferred modernist vocabulary. Miller lives here with her husband and two dogs, and this space has witnessed the maturation and expansion of her design philosophy.

Miller herself once said, My vision is often bolder than my budget. Therefore, the formation of this residence was a slow and continuous accumulation. Over a decade, she searched for ideal furniture and spent three years personally participating in the renovation. She completed a large number of details by herself: replacing air vents, reconfiguring door handles, making teak kitchen pulls, and even installing most of the wall lamps and pendant lamps herself. Only heavy-duty fixtures like the large Tassel pendant lamp by Apparatus Studio required professional assistance; the Roman plaster wall beside the fireplace was the result of her experimentation with Portola materials.

空间的陈列体现了她对 20 世纪中段北欧、意大利与日本设计的深刻理解:如 George Nakashima(乔治·中岛)椅、Noguchi(野口勇)灯具、Asko Finland(芬兰 Asko)扶手椅与 Azucena(阿祖切纳)壁灯等,都与古董柜、陶艺作品与现代家具并置。
The spatial arrangement reflects her profound understanding of mid-20th-century Nordic, Italian and Japanese design: pieces such as George Nakashima chairs, Noguchi lamps, Asko Finland armchairs and Azucena wall lamps are juxtaposed with antique cabinets, ceramic works and modern furniture. She emphasizes unique and even slightly obscure sources, often seeking spiritually charged objects at auction houses like Bukowskis and Bonhams or through second-hand channels around the world.

In the bedroom, the concise Jenni Kayne bed creates a stable tone with the Japanese antique chest of drawers; in the study, the Artemide Shogun lamp, along with the metal chair and John van Koert desk, form a precise hierarchy of modernism; and in the secondary living room, a Jean Prouvé wooden-metal cabinet becomes a small offset point that breaks the order, presenting the unbalanced beauty that keeps the space alive as described by Miller.

This residence is not only her daily living space but also a professional experimentation venue. She constantly reorganizes, replaces and re-arranges things within it, allowing Anne Rothensteins paintings to have a dialogue with Apparatus lamps, Lalique vases, plain Japanese pottery, etc. Miller believes that living among high-quality objects enables one to truly perceive the expressive power of craftsmanship, and also gives the occupants a more sensitive touch and spiritual orientation towards daily life.
