In Manhattan’s Upper East Side, within an Art Deco landmark overlooking Central Park, Boston designer Nina Farmer composed a modern symphony of decorative arts for a longtime client.
A Symphony of Vintage and Modern
The homeowner is an avid collector, with treasures ranging from a Carlo Bugatti bench to a cabinet by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, each a legendary mark in art history. The synergy between designer and collector meant this two-bedroom renovation did not wander in indecision but went straight to the essence: how to renew the timeless allure of Art Deco within a contemporary context.
The Overture Begins with a Rug
The dining room is undoubtedly the crescendo. Custom de Gournay gold-leaf wallpaper, with swirling curves and sharp angles, draws from Imperial Japanese motifs while weaving in Jean Dunand’s Art Deco language. A 1930s Italian chandelier crowns the space, while the dining table and chairs traverse between French elegance and midcentury modern. The room, caught in the tension between vintage and modern, seems veiled in a golden mist.
The “Opulent Moment” in the Dining Room
Farmer likes to set the tone with a rug—here, a golden-brown carpet interlaced with silver and copper patterns flows like liquid light across the living room floor. The dining room and study echo this with jewel-toned hues, infusing the home with layered chromatic depth.
The Drama of Walls and Textures
Walls form her second move. The parchment-like surface of the living room exudes delicacy and warmth; the vertical grooves in the white plaster entryway immediately establish a Deco-style sense of ceremony. In the master bedroom, Loro Piana striped fabrics softly layer calmness and depth.
Ninety percent of the furniture consists of antiques or vintage pieces, carefully sourced from Maison Gerard, Newel, and 1stDibs. In the study, Fritz Nagel’s leather desk and Jules Leleu’s pedestal chairs converse in harmony, while Jean Cohen’s Butterfly Blue Place injects rhythmic red and blue notes by the window.
Farmer’s challenge lay in scale. Even with opulent decorative language, the design had to fit the apartment’s proportions. She struck a balance between complexity and simplicity—luxury without noise, vintage without heaviness.
A Concerto of Furniture and Collectibles
