COFFER House,

2025-09-23 20:24

Interpreting the symbiosis of Brutalism and the poetry of nature from an artistic perspective, COFFER House, constructed with concrete and steel as its framework and gridded floor slabs as its rhythm, transforms the owners desire for durability and economy into a living space that combines structural strength with emotional warmth within its 782-square-meter space—allowing the cold architecture to cultivate a soft sense of lifes poetry.

When Gets Architects took on this project, the clients core brief was clear and pragmatic: a durable, economical home that could provide a warm and comfortable home. Rather than masking its functional essence with ornate ornamentation, the designers opted for an exposed construction approach, allowing the raw texture of the materials to dominate the space. From the street, COFFER House resembles a modern fortress. The ground floor is wrapped in an existing solid wall, covered in creeping vines. The verdant foliage contrasts sharply with the rough concrete base. Rather than demolishing this wall, it was preserved and transformed into a vertical garden, mitigating the tropical suns intense heat while also infusing the stark building with a breath of nature. Running your fingertips over the wall, you can feel the grainy concrete against the smooth texture of the vines. This tactile collision of hard and soft is the designs original expression of the balance between practicality and poetry.

The spatial narrative lies in the rhythm of the gridded floor and its play of light and shadow. At the entrance, a horizontal waffle slab extends from the ramp to the backyard pool terrace, forming a column-free, suspended canopy. During the day, sunlight filters through the gaps in the grid, casting a dappled, geometric play of light and shadow on the ground. As the sun moves, the light and shadows dance like musical notes, imbuing the monotonous concrete floor with rhythm. At night, light filters through the grid, creating a soft halo that illuminates the path home and dispels the buildings heaviness. Even more ingenious, this gridded floor is more than just a decorative element; its a growing structure—the designers have reserved openings for future skylights, preserving the purity of the current form while leaving room for spatial evolution. Passing through the grid canopy, the entrance ramp slowly rises, replacing the original steep stairs. Stepping on the non-slip concrete surface, there is no rush or crampedness, only gradual and calmness. The planters on both sides are full of lush vegetation, and the moist greenery and the cold concrete form a sensory buffer, making the transition from street to residence full of ritual.

The design of the functional spaces deeply integrates practical needs with emotional experience. The ground floor is designated as a utility area, with a garage and equipment room neatly arranged. Yet, thanks to the plant-covered walls, it feels less cold. Inside, the space unfolds in a rhythm of compression and release. The narrow, low entryway deliberately limits light, directing the eye to the moringa tree in the central courtyard. This vibrant green serves as an emotional anchor within the austere space, instantly relieving the restlessness of the outside world. Beyond the courtyard, the corridor unfolds along a horizontal axis. On one side, a mirrored pool reflects the linear skylight in the ceiling. Light filtering through the skylight filters onto the pool, creating a play of shimmering light and shadow, imbuing the walkway with a poetic flow. On the other side, a double-height space opens up. A slender staircase leads to the second floor. Large fixed glass windows frame the dry landscape garden and moringa tree into a dynamic canvas, allowing a constant sense of nature even from within.

While compact, the second-floor workspace reflects the designers commitment to both focus and transparency. Facing the pool and backyard, large windows allow for ample natural light. While working, one can gaze upon the rambutan and frangipani trees in the courtyard, their lush tropical greenery alleviating the fatigue of work. A cantilevered steel grating balcony delicately pierces the street-facing facade, allowing one to gaze out onto the street while appreciating the bustling atmosphere of the outside world without being disturbed by the hustle and bustle. The transparency of the steel grating creates an airy illusion of suspended space, creating a dialogue between light and heaviness and contrasting with the thick concrete beneath. This introverted building also provides an outlet for breathing outwards.

The master suite is a gentle haven amidst the cold. Surrounded by a water feature, the morning sunlight filters through the glass windows, shimmering on the waters surface. The light and shadows cast across the concrete walls, softening the harsh textures. The bathroom connects to the bedroom through a panoramic glass wall, where the bathtub and basin are sculpturally integrated into the space. Free of extraneous ornamentation, they emerge elegantly bathed in natural light. The walk-in closet is concealed behind the wall, ensuring storage without disrupting the overall spatial flow. Here, residents can wake to the sound of water in the morning light and fall asleep to the shadows of the trees in the courtyard at night. The rugged materials, far from shielding from the warmth of life, become even more relatable thanks to the integration of natural elements.

The design of COFFER House is essentially a profound resonance between the clients needs and architectural aesthetics. Gets Architects avoided interpreting Brutalism as a cold symbol. Instead, they addressed the clients pragmatic needs for durability and affordability. Using exposed structures, raw materials, and a thriving design, they created a home that is powerful yet not cold, poetic yet not ostentatious. Here, every concrete texture, every grid of light and shadow, and every plants growth speaks to the idea that practicality and poetry are not mutually exclusive. Beneath the rugged exterior lies a genuine respect for life, offering residents both a sturdy shelter and a glimpse into the poetic beauty of nature amidst the hustle and bustle of the tropical city.
