An abandoned 1965 home in Pasadena has been given a new lease of life by design studio Breland Harper.

Led by Michael Breland and Peter Harper, the project redefines the spatial pattern of the house and garden through the integration of architecture, interior design and landscape design. Harper said they were inspired by architect Vladimir Ossipoffs unique tropical modernist style and aimed to create a pavilion with a medieval aesthetic.

The project makes full use of the existing mature trees on the site, which are considered as poles in the landscape design. The plants are arranged in a way that naturally drifts, forming a series of dynamic and rich experiences.

The addition of SLATE floors and natural wooden ceilings to the interior echoes the terraces and balconies, blurring the line between interior and exterior and enhancing visual and functional coherence.

The furniture in the space is a dialogue of design masters - classic works by Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Hans Wegner and others, interwoven with bronzes and soft textures to create a mechanistic living environment. At the same time, the exquisite beauty of 18th - to 20th-century East Asian art is incorporated into the decor, such as Japanese kiri-wood tansu boxes on the staircase landing, and vintage Japanese screens in the dining room that retain the original papier-mache, details that subtly connect the building with nature.

Breland and Harpers love of history and craft is rooted in childhood memories. Harpers mother decorated the family with Chippendale dining tables and 19th century antiques, while Breland grew up in a simple Frank Lloyd Wright home influenced by Persian rugs and ethnic art. These cultural deposits became the source of inspiration for their design practice.

The house is a concrete expression of a way of life. The candlelight flickers, reflecting the outline of the vintage furniture, and the earth tones create a calm and warm undertone. The designer duo uses the home as a medium to convey the concept of openness and kindness. Whether it is reverence for nature or respect for history, Breland Harpers Mid-Century Pavilion writes a lyric poem about space and time in a modern context, and each stroke is engraved with the temperature of the years and the depth of humanity.
