The Mokkado Cafe in Toyama, Japan, was crafted by MUKU Design Studio, a space that was once the founders birthplace and also a traditional Toyama style drug production factory. Today, it has been transformed into a minimalist cafe that not only continues the memory of history, but also provides a warm and unique place for modern people to experience.

Mokkados design philosophy is deeply rooted in historical heritage. In order to preserve the character of the old building, the design team carefully dismantled and reused materials from the original structure during the renovation. This design approach maintains the historical essence of the building while creating new spatial experiences through modern design techniques. The overall style is simple but full of texture, with a strong cultural atmosphere.

At the heart of the cafe is a doma - a traditional Japanese space where visitors can walk in their shoes. While doma typically features dirt floors, in Mokkado, the doma is made up of steps and benches that create a natural area for interaction and relaxation, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. This design not only creates an open environment, but also provides a space for customers to relax and enjoy the conversation.

The cafe houses a central art installation made of stone and wood excavated during the renovation, symbolizing the interweaving of past and present. These materials not only preserve the historical memory of the space, but also inject a unique aesthetic into the cafe through the exquisite design. The herbs grown in the installation reflect the cafes heritage of its herbal roots. In addition, the design of the cafe focuses on the accessibility and openness of the space. The Ivy-covered rope dividers provide an evolving visual element around the doma, and the plants enrich the cafes atmosphere over time. The overall design is simple and full of variety, bringing visual and emotional pleasure.

Mokkado is a beautiful space and a place to pass on the concept of healthy living. The cafe features products such as chai tea and shaved ice, which are based on traditional herbal remedies, continuing the tradition of herbal production carried out here in the past. Customers can enjoy healthy food here and buy medicine in the retail area to bring the healing power of traditional herbs home. Mokkado successfully blends traditional Toyama style with modern minimalist design. It not only carries the history and culture of the past, but also provides a place for modern people to relax and enjoy a healthy life.
