History, artistry and modernity are the defining characteristics of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is an economic, cultural and political center, and has earned the nickname Garden City for its dozens of boulevards and hundreds of street gardens or green parks, as well as contemporary buildings hidden among trees and flowers.
Kate Bahirka is the founder of Bakhirka Apparel. She has traveled to many countries and the local culture has greatly influenced her style and taste, and the brand has demonstrated the essence of personal experience and growth as well as self-exploration. A few years ago she invited Olga Fradina to design her private home, and now they are collaborating again on Kate Bahirkas SPACE Wellness Centre in Kiev.

Influenced by Kievs strong historical heritage, Ukrainian designer Olga Fradina takes the combination of traditional and modern art as her design concept, and the mixing and matching style of different times environments, cultural details and different elements contributes to her pursuit of timeless design aesthetics. This coincides with the owner of the project, Katya Bakhirkas attitude towards life and pursuit of aesthetics.

The wellness center is housed in an early 20th-century building that was once a candle factory before it was converted into apartments. Olga Fradina first removed internal partitions to open up the space and reconfigured several necessary functional areas - a small entrance hall, a dressing room, a group class room, two massage rooms, a tea room and a room with a bathtub.

•••
Olga Fradina
Olga Fradina uses monochrome as the tone of the space and tactile micro-cement, plaster, wood, copper and vintage brick as the main materials to arouse the interest of visitors and create a soothing atmosphere. For her, each material has its own unique structure, reflectivity and roughness, and combining them creates an expressive but not flashy effect.

Nikita Vlasov
The massage room is painted in deep colors, and a brass-backed niche displays the work of Ukrainian artist Nikita Vlasov, which is like a pictographic symbol, and its abstract image reflects the artists attempt to express a pure energy. The silhouettes of trees on the facade reference the Japanese printmaking tradition and are hand-painted by the artist.

Personality-oriented design is the best way to create a truly living space.
Staritska Maysternya
The tea room is underlaid by soft colours to create a soothing and intimate atmosphere, while the centre of the space is a three-metre long solid wood table designed by Ukrainian studio Staritska Maysternya.

The bar walls are lined with vintage brick - the same material used to build old houses - and the tabletops are made of Cambrian black granite. The open cabinets hold a variety of items from Kate Bahirkas travels in South America and Asia.

Art comes from life. For designers, no matter new materials or old materials, no matter a collection or some scenery seen in daily life or on a journey, no matter something beautiful or regrettable, they will bring different perception and experience to people. In the future, they may all become important nutrients for design. Just like the final presentation of SPACE Healthy Space.
