“Half of space depends on design the other half is derived from presence and spirit.”

Quarry Hill House
Quarry Hill House is a modern family residence located in the Bendigo area of Victoria. The interior decoration by Chelsea Hing showcases the studios ability to enhance the concepts contained in existing buildings by reimagining spatial sequences and introducing a clear sense of energy inspired by the clients lifestyle.
In the later stages of the new building project cycle, clients engage with designers whose focus is on improving the layout and bringing attraction and depth through a series of strategic interventions and additions. As Chelsea Hing, the founder and director of the studio, said, This is a residence that places great emphasis on the interior because of the location of windows, the direction and orientation of the site, and the strong connection between the residence and itself. She continued, Although there is a very powerful landscape view surrounding the house and laying the foundation, for me, the reality is that it only focuses on the interior.
This is largely due to the two story high gap at the entrance, where many of the most eye-catching interventions (related to layout and materiality) are reflected. It extends from the house all the way to the back living area, flanked by wings of bedrooms, and its vastness was initially unbearable. We must explore how to bring a sense of intimacy to this vast space, Chelsea said.
As the foundation of the building has already been laid and materials are the key to this pursuit, designers can confidently construct color palettes with contrasting yet complementary textures and tones, which is crucial for the projects enduring identity. As Chelsea said, We believe this is a very powerful interior design project, and the materials give it solemnity, elegance, and sturdiness.
Specifically, the use of wood is an indispensable part of this narrative. We really try to avoid using gypsum boards as much as possible, so we instead seek to create an interaction between interesting materials. In the gaps, French oak boards made by Storey are widely used; Truffles cover two layers of walls, while clouds wrap around the middle ceiling and floor. The combination of deep chocolate tones of truffles and light oak finishes of clouds is visually pleasing, and Chelsea has demonstrated the value of this material in spatial energy. I really cant overemphasize the importance of wood bearing the heavy responsibility here - its an important element, and we can drive this result thanks to being manufactured by Storeys, she said.
The clever material response is supported by clever interpretations of the layout, especially in this critical area of the house. Many of our work is focused on correctly arranging the central spine of the house, Chelsea explained. This is a rabbits nest made up of a series of open doors, so we worked hard to clean it up. As a result, three inconspicuous doors replaced multiple thresholds, and all doors had deep openings. These openings are adorned with wooden walls and corners specifically designed for large artworks and custom cabinetry, bringing a unique rhythm to challenging blank areas. Therefore, this measure enhances the overall spatial sequence and creates a warm atmosphere through carefully selected artworks and items.
The exploration of touch and color tones runs through the entire residence. The office is full of vitality, and furniture, textiles, and artworks use warm ochre tones, forming a sharp contrast with the cold tones of concrete; The master bedroom suite is a quiet and luxurious study, equipped with gorgeous textiles and stone; Made by Storeys, almost every room uses French oak boards, creating a wonderful sense of cohesion. As Chelsea explained, many popular finishes and tones cannot be conveyed through rendering, so every project requires trust and belief between architects and clients. Customer trust is very important, and I like to give it my all to make them go further and enjoy a little bit of fun - I think we should be able to do that, she said.
Quarry Hill House embodies this emotion. It is precisely those often underestimated decorations and details, such as micro cement in the bathroom - Chelsea believes that the craftsmans hand is an indispensable part of the final result - or the naturally formed layered tones during the project process that bring a sparkling beauty, ultimately distinguishing one project from another.
For Chelsea, these moments have brought meaning to her practice. I think this is what we as designers do - trying to create an emotional effect from the architectural form, she said. We talk about the interaction between planning, materiality, and lighting, but ultimately the broader purpose is: how can we design a home to accommodate everything our customers want and lay the foundation for their next stage of life? This is a convincing insight, as Chelsea summarized it as an unknown story of home space.
