Studio Lyon/Szot designed a 750 SF addition to an existing Spanish-style home from the 1970s. We looked at contemporary Portuguese and Spanish details to develop a material response to the addition and expansion. Our biggest challenge was connecting small rooms spread across the home into a fluid experience. A critical part of our brief was creating a flexible wing to accommodate an expanding extended family or a future caregiver. Critical to our consideration was recreating a shared space for the family to cook, live, and entertain in.

An open kitchen is a hallmark of modern home design, fostering interaction between family members. Kitchen designs can include countertops in stainless steel or quartz, as well as stylish cabinetry and storage space. The island is the centerpiece of the kitchen, serving as a multifunctional area for cooking, dining, and socializing. The island can be made of the same material as the cabinets, or a contrasting material can be used to add visual interest.

Large areas of white walls provide a bright and neutral background for the space, which can highlight other decorative elements. Wood veneer beams add a touch of natural and warm colors to the modern design. Wood veneer beams not only bring a natural feel visually, but also provide warmth to the touch. The choice of wood can be light oak or walnut to suit different decorative styles.
