On a beach in Sydneys north, Cadence - Co overcame a challenging site to create a gentle sanctuary that embraces its stunning natural setting.

To create Northern Lights on a small piece of land, a compact surfers paradise with stunning views of Sydneys coveted Palm Beach, required a multidisciplinary practice Cadence - Co faced numerous challenges.

Not only is the site narrow and steep, but there are also stability issues, overgrown weeds and difficult access. Biblical rain during construction added another layer of difficulty. This result is a testament to Cadence - Cos entire team of architects, designers and builders working together to overcome the challenges of geography and nature, said Michael Kilkeary, the firms principal architect.

Complex architecture and engineering, including extensive foundation works as well as geotechnical and structural works - see concrete and wood studios located between two existing homes and embracing a protected native cheese tree. A concrete driveway extends and slopes, creating the studios dramatic roof line and preserving the streetscape.

The coastal area determined the choice of exterior materials: shaped concrete, hardwood wood, copper, textured rendering walls. Due to the harsh Marine environment and the difficulty of continuous maintenance, we chose a strong and durable material, said Natasha Grice, project architect. Hardwood and copper finishes age and rust gracefully over the life of the building and blend into the natural environment.

While the building process is very complex, the property itself is characterized by simplicity. The suspended studio sits below the curved concrete roof line and contains a separate study and bathroom. The studio was accessed not by an internal staircase but by an external staircase, a deliberate choice to make the interior room as wide as possible.

Facing north to capture the two-kilometre arc of Palm Beach, the balconies are framed by elegant wooden slatted screens. When you stand on the balcony, the screen provides privacy while having a diagonal view of the ocean and rainforest, says Natasha. The intention is for them to float as lightweight inserts between the heavy horizontal surfaces of the concrete slabs.

Composition Studio 

The interior design reflects the low-key nature of the project. Polished concrete, engineered wood floors, oak joinery, and textured old white tiles and custom quartzite vanities from Earp Bros in the bathroom form a muted material palette, while vintage furniture from Composition Studio brings warmth and character.

The retro aesthetic reinforces peoples ambition to turn back the clock and strip away the complexities of life, says Natasha. The pieces also work perfectly with the hardwood material.

Secluded Northern Lights is a shrine to simplicity, where humble Spaces belie the ingenious design thinking of Cadence - Co, a full-service practice of architects, interior designers, artisans and builders.
