“Half of space depends on design the other half is derived from presence and spirit.”
Elm Residence was jointly designed by Drew Cole Architects and GOLDE, elegantly extending around a mature elm tree on site. Architects and designers both uphold a commitment to craftsmanship and complex details from old to new structures, emphasizing the creation of a warm and pleasant atmosphere, and maximizing natural lighting and ventilation opportunities in indoor spaces.
The open volume of the newly expanded section is connected to the original Edwardian era residences through subtle textured finishes. This expanded family residence is located in Glen Ellis, a suburb of Melbourne, retaining important heritage details from the front of the site and integrating them into a more connected residential layout from the rear.
This smooth transition to the living and dining areas continues to cross the indoor and outdoor barriers, further connecting to the garden and surrounding landscape. The residential experience aims to evoke a sense of journey, integrating layers that attract interest, and achieving balance through deliberate contrasts in the design. Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN both enhance and highlight the familiarity of residential properties.
There is now a concealed additional facility located at the rear of the residence, which is still hidden in the street view. The wooden corridor that connects different eras within the residence serves as a transitional point, and this natural material becomes a key element guiding the design of new buildings. Recognizing the historical significance of the wood used in the original residence and reinterpreting this material from a modern perspective is also important for new spaces.
Modern expansion is known for its fashionable box shaped form, which is a carefully designed design that echoes the original design of the residence. However, it is the carefully considered material selection that ensures that Elm Residence gives a sense of delicacy and elegance. From the island covered with limestone to Molveno Blanco marble, the natural stone used throughout the process exhibits classical and expressive textures. The material palette unifies the indoor space, creating a peaceful and balanced atmosphere.
Elm Residence fully utilizes its vast space and retains recognition of its original design. Drew Cole Architects and GOLDEN ensure that the residence not only respects its Edwardian origins, but also boldly embraces contemporary livability.
