Henri-Martin II Is Atelier MKD’s second project along the highly sought-after inner-city avenue, located only a short distance from the Eiffel Tower. The brief for the project was simple: to create a modern yet functional interior that drew on the apartment’s locale and Art Deco origins..
The interiors possess hallmarks of quintessential Parisian apartments: lofty ceilings, chevron floors and windows that graciously open onto balconies. Atelier MKD committed themselves to preserving and enhancing these features to maintain a connection to the building’s past.
The trees surrounding the building, which bring beautiful dappled light into the interiors, inspired the material palette. Characterised by neutral fabrics, warm woods and light stones, the palette creates a soft and intimate atmosphere within the apartment. The curves that feature throughout the entire project echo this softness, as exemplified by the curved stucco walls that subtly divide the living and dining spaces.
Henri Martin
Henri Martin is a minimal home located in Paris, France, designed by Atelier MKD. Atelier MKD has revamped an existing Parisian home located in the 16th arrondissement to give it a contemporary yet warm feel, while retaining its historical heritage.
The inherited shell of the house lacked a modern relevance, but the designers ensured that the feeling of ‘home’ was felt in every aspect, including the use of textural layering and comfortable furnishings. The home’s generous volumes were celebrated and visual connections were maintained throughout with full-height drapery and a careful play of hierarchy created internally.
The designers stripped back the existing alterations to reveal certain ornate elements, such as the curved archways, which were then incorporated into the new design. The result is a fusion of the past and present, with softening openings and innovative appliances and fixtures enhancing the home’s liveability while maintaining its historical character.
