Fearon Hay Architects is a New Zealand-based architectural design studio founded in 1998 by architects Tim Hay and Jeff Fearon. They are good at thinking about each project in a different site environment and work mainly in office, commercial, private residential and hotel projects.

The studio recently completed their latest project, the Matagouri House. With stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the magnificent Kawarau Mountains, the architects took inspiration from the sites setting and combined it with the practicality of the innovative house, creating a unique character through materials and fine craftsmanship between the natural landscape and the intense family atmosphere, and giving the house a wild beauty of living in nature.

住宅的建筑样式在一定程度上受到苏格兰农民小屋低矮的双层结构和草屋顶的影响，与周边草丛中的两个天然土丘形成呼应。在起伏地形的主导下，住宅超越了简单的庇护功能，温暖和精致的设计元素置入，反映出高山场地的风貌及特征，同时提升了空间的宜居性。

The architectural style of the Matagouri house is influenced in part by the low double-storey structure and grass roof of the Scottish peasant cottage, which echoes the two natural mounds in the surrounding grass. Dominated by the undulating terrain, the house goes beyond a simple shelter function to incorporate warm and sophisticated design elements that reflect the alpine site and its character while enhancing the livability of the space.

The layout of the house consists of two interconnected cube masonry structures, which are externally buffered by a sheltered courtyard. Located on the north slope, the building was inspired by Tim Hays tower structure. The top floor is the main sleeping area with a 360° view; The lower level is a living area facing the lake and mountains. In order to avoid southerly winds, the courtyard is located in the center of the house, allowing outdoor activities even in inclement weather.

The northern part of the ground floor contains the kitchen, living room and dining area, while the southern side, separated by a courtyard, houses the guest room and study area, all of which offer views of the natural outdoors. Through local craftsmanship, the interior is coordinated by wooden structures, creating a harmonious atmosphere that pays homage to light and materials.
