49 East Street, New York is a small apartment project located in a historic building in the heart of Manhattan. After seeing existing condos on the market, I decided to take on the project and bring my own experience into that space.

The original layout was dictated by the structure of the building and I fell in love with it. The kitchen nook feels cozy, and the ceiling beams bring some brutality to the space. However, I cleaned the entrance to make it more airy and spacious, but left all structural elements open to accentuate the architectural advantages of the space.

Like my previous projects, the design is based on the composition of different volumes, adjusting their proportions to create a dialogue between them. Although the project brought some new challenges due to the complex layout and many volumes that were not always coherent.

With the goal of creating a peaceful and peaceful home in a city as dynamic and busy as New York, I stripped away everything that felt excessive and out of place and tried to bring balance in the richness of form and volume.

This resulted in an open living room combined with a dining area. The kitchen nook remains where it was, although I changed the kitchen itself, updating the proportions, materials and extending it to the dining area.

In place of the walk-in closet next to the entry area, marble storage was added. It helps bring some natural light into the area, making it look more spacious.

Famous furniture pieces by Jean-Royer, Le Corbusier and Pierre Chapo highlight the condos history and bring classic European design to America. The incredible work of Otis Jones, Egon Schiele, Nickolas Muray and Charles Kalpakian is completing the visual identity. The result is a quiet retreat in the heart of New York City, a space that takes you away from the hustle and bustle outside and helps you focus on the intimate interior vibe.
