A photograph of a Hawaiian fisherman from the year 1907 functions as a role model and gave inspiration for the concept. A man sitting on a rock with just the very essential bit of clothing on his body is preparing his gear to go out and hunt. We appreciate the intimacy, the balance and honesty of this situation.
The guest room transports the idea of an intimate and meaningful experience. Two curvy concrete tables who compliment each other capture the rooms center attention. Inspired by the fisherman, cut off granite stones from Norway and wooden stumps present the possibility to take a seat. The table has a rough yet pleasant surface and gives the idea of a terrazzo structure. Boulders of different colour ways add a natural and warm color palette to the interior.
The floor and wall plastering pick up the warm tones and give a natural and earthy atmosphere. Linen curtains with a bespoke hanging system, made of aluminum, complete the seating situation gently.
A stone, which is part of the restaurants corporate identity, slowly spins in the window at the most prominent place of the restaurant. Hand-crafted concrete applications with a rough texture go hand in hand with stainless steel kitchen counters which are separated from the guest room through a large glass.
When striving through Berlin every once in a while the cityscape is slightly disrupted by gigantic concrete monsters. Buildings stored under the name of brutalism. „What characterises the Brutalism…is precisely its brutality , it’s je-m’en-foutisme, its bloody-mindedness.“ Says Reyner Banham around 1955 describing the phenomenon which is drawing our attention to the fullest. Regarding to his quote these buildings, who partly define the cities vibe, were always different than others. Along with their unique formal language and composition of volumes comes a certain imperfection, a topic which is quite en vogue when speaking about interior aesthetics these days.
Taking a closer look at the composition of this different way of creating architecture we stumbled upon a very distinctively characterizing and mesmerizing building material called exposed aggregate concrete. By simply washing out a thin layer of concrete after taking off the mould of building parts the exposed material shows the gravel, which is holding the concrete together. The artificially generated result can be adjusted by changing the concretes recipe.
We deep dived into this topic and created our very own personal formula to get to our perception of aesthetic interpretation. Inspired by the formal language of Berlin’s brutalist architecture and driven by our studio’s aesthetics we developed a series of seven interior objects. They demonstrate simplicity in form with a strong focus on material and a unique interpretation of proportion and material composition. Exposed aggregate concrete is put in context with carefully brushed and waxed aluminum as they create a unit. Some pieces celebrate the material as they simply consist either of pure metal translated into a soothing formal language or paying an homage to nature when giving bigger gravel pieces a stage as a ceiling hanging object. The Waschbeton series is our attempt to give a nearly forgotten and repelled material a new renaissance. It is our answer to paying tribute to the city we live and love. 01 SIDE TABLE 尺寸:53厘米ø 40厘米 主材:Dimensions、Washed Aggregate Concrete、Botticino Marbel Gravels、Solid Aluminium Disc
