Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvels inspired reading of its urban context, the buildings multiple tapered surfaces create a unique silhouette--both an heir to the classic towers that shaped the New York skyline and a paradigm for the skyscraper of the future.
The building’s massing follows closely the zoning envelope of Midtown Manhattan, and its fa?ade expresses the structural bracing required to withstand wind loads. According to the building’s design architect, Jean Nouvel, “its sculpted shape was inspired by man’s fingers; its innovative ‘diagrid’ structure soars into the sky.”Nouvel is known for visionary buildings that, like 53 West 53, are shaped by his insightful reading of both their physical and cultural contexts.

Interior designer André Fu, of Hong Kong-based studio AFSO, played off this exterior when creating this peaceful 36th-floor model residence. “I have paid particular attention to Nouvel’s architecture by celebrating the unique diagrid detail into the way we articulate the flow of the apartment,” Fu says. “I believe my work revolves around an aesthetic that embraces cultural nuances, and it is quintessentially an aesthetic that is relaxed and calm.”
