Doshi Levien has created a series of carpets that evoke the glamorous and sensual world of the tribal folk embroidery from India. Doshi Levien is a design studio internationally appreciated, founded by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien. Nipa knew and had in mind the beautiful handmade embroidery by the nomadic community from Rabaris, Kutch region.
Her aunt had an embroidery workshop in Ahmedabad, with 25 highly qualified workers in hand embroidery, working with silk, cotton, metallic sequins and sparkling mirrors. The workers sit on the floor, surrounded by all the materials and works together to make the next carpet. Thereby collaborating, the carpets with intricate embroideries require several days to be completed.
Doshi Levien wanted the rug collection for Nani Marquina to reference the unfinished embroideries like studies of different techniques in progress, as they gradually emerge over time. The spontaneous compositions of the rugs embody the serendipity and freedom to improvise inherent in each step of a handmade piece; Joyful, irreverent and unique.
