Designed by debartolo architects, the new 5,000 sf retail bicycle shop in Scottsdale, Arizona is a temple to cycling. Responding to the context of the area, the orientation to the north and the view corridor along Marshall Way, the form of the new Bicycle Haüs conforms to the height restrictions while creating a fresh, new image along First Avenue.

A simple wedge in form, the structure maximizes the volume along the street and reduces to a single-story volume toward the south. Sited toward the eastern side of the site, the western side is preserved for landscape, site circulation and parallel on-site parking. The restrained material palate for the building comes from the history of western materials allowed to weather in the desert environment. Weathering corrugated metal siding, galvanized metal and low-e insulated glass are the predominate materials of the exterior, creating a strong yet sustainable image that will not require exterior painting to gain its richness and quality.
Bicycle Haüs combines a sleek, modern building with traditional elements including an entire wall skinned in reclaimed barn wood and stairs re-purposed from high-school bleachers. The barn wood and bleachers are from Missoula, Montana, where store co-owners and childhood sweethearts Shasta and Kale Keltz grew up.

“We wanted to make an architectural statement that celebrates the fast-paced sport of cycling, but we also wanted the building to reflect where we came from,” says Keltz. “This new building represents who we are on a number of levels; it speaks to our commitment, our roots and our passion for the sport.”

Nearly double the size as large as their prior location, the new store is designed with a solar-ready, sustainable concept that welcomes customers into a day lit, double volume interior space celebrating the romance and precision of the sport. The 48-feet of 30-foot high glass on the north facade welcomes in the indirect daylight and views and simultaneously advertises a healthy lifestyle to the community.

“We are fortunate to have customers from all over the country who we consider family, who love and respect the sport as much as we do.
