Front cover of Dana Lixenberg's 'The Mayor'. For the project, the Dutch photographer returned home to the Netherlands to photograph the everyday lives of the mayors of 22 different municipalities
The photographs were commissioned as part of Document Nederland, a series produced annually by the Rijksmuseum and the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad. As well as in the book, the works are currently on display at the Amsterdam Museum

In creating her portrait of Dutch officialdom, Lixenberg was most intrigued about the world these public servants inhabit - the rooms where they hold their meetings and the ephemera they keep on their desks

The aesthetic is stark and unflinching. Lixenberg aims to capture something of the life beneath the veneer of officialdom by focusing on what she calls 'the unspectacular'. Pictured here is Mervyn Stegers' office, Tubbergen
