Honda's Micro Commuter Concept explores the idea of a car as a personal gadget. This tiny electric commuter can be highly customised by sliding graphics sheets into the front, sides and rear. Designer Ryoji Lida says he wanted it to be like a smartphone

The interior of the AC-X (Advanced Cruiser Experience), a clever concept that offers two driving modes: engine-drive for self drive and auto-drive for autonomous cruising. Here the steering column retracts into the dashboard, an ottoman appears and the interior illuminates to create a relaxed living-room feel

Honda's small N-Box mini-van, built for the Asian market. It's only 4m long, yet its innovative interior layout means the cabin is roomy, the reconfigurable rear compartment allowing for a generous boot. These kei-class cars look great, almost gadget-like, and driving them was simply fun, the upright seating position adding to the van feel.

At Honda's 'Wako' innovation hub in Tokyo, Wallpaper* tested out the electric RC-E motorbike, based on the classic RC racing-bike series

The Honda Collection Hall features a museum of the traditional sort. It showcases restored motorcycles and cars as well as Honda's research into robot technology - which began in 1986 with the rather clunky E0 but has since evolved into the almost human ASIMO

Honda's humanoid, called ASIMO, an acronym for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, is a gender-neutral autonomous machine with astounding decision-making capabilities, capable of responding to the movement of people and its surroundings

The combination of strong legs, an expanded range of movements and a newly developed control technology enables ASIMO to run forwards and backwards, change its mind mid-stride and adjust its steps to the terrain

Along with ASIMO's ultimate purpose to aid the elderly and disabled, Honda unveiled Uni-Cub, a compact one-wheel-drive mobility device that uses gyroscopic stabilising to provide movement in all directions (a small wheel on the tail allows the driver to rotate 360-degrees using a joystick control)
