Amorphis and Mathew Au's Afterglow installation in the Student Experience Centre, Oregon State University has completely overhauled the concept of what a university atrium should look like
The new space, complete with practical seating area and reception desk, is anything but boring. A vibrant sunset scales the walls...
... while around 700 powder-coated aluminium slats cover the two flights of stairs, leading up to an impressive mirrored ceiling
Ramiro Diaz-Granados, principal of Amorphis, faced the challenge of making the installation a usable, practical space, as well as a foward-thinking and inspiring installation
Diaz-Granados also aimed to stitch together the original neoclassical student centre, with the curves and elliptical shapes formed by its stairway
The result is a modern installation that sparks the same awe as Italian painters used to aspire to when creating their ceiling frescos, where visitors can simply look up and see the heavens – or at least beyond their usual horizons
